The knee disarticulation amputation (through-the-knee amputation) is performed when it is no longer possible to keep a short residual piece of the lower leg. Disarticulated knees can only be fitted with modular prostheses due to their structural, functional, and aesthetic requirements.
In contrast to a transfemoral amputation, the residual limb following knee disarticulation can be entirely filled. Femoral condyles convey body weight to the prosthesis socket, eliminating the need for a tuberous seat. The condylar residual limb’s bulky form provides a rotationally stable connection to the prosthetic socket.
A soft socket constructed of thermoplastic PE foam that is anatomically shaped inside compensates for the undercuts by providing the exterior a conical shape. This makes putting on the prosthesis while sitting simple.
The residual limb musculature remains balanced since the adductors were not transected, and the long laver arm allows for strong prosthesis control. Both old and energetic people benefit from this procedure over a transfemoral amputation. Because of the length of the residual limb, only a single knee joint fabrication can be used.
