Hip amputations such as hemipelvectomy, hip disarticulation, and intertrochanteric amputation can be used with pelvic prostheses. If an injury or cancer prevents a higher distal amputation level, then this type of prosthesis is required. An amputation is done in the upper part of the femur, leaving the proximal portions of the femur intact, as opposed to a “real disarticulation” in the hip joint area.

When one pelvic half needs to be removed completely or partially, a hemipelvectomy is carried out. The enclosure and support conditions in this circumstance are extremely challenging. Because the pelvic sitting area is lost with removal of the ischial tuberosity and the encasement surface is diminished due to the loss of the os ilium, the pelvic socket needs to be encased in the lower thoracic region. Orthopaedic technical fitting is made considerably more challenging by the need for prosthetic bladder or intestine outlets in addition to the motion organs that are damaged by hemipelvectomies.
