Electric motor-powered hands, wrists, and elbows are controlled by myoelectric power. The prosthesis socket has surface electrodes that come into contact with the skin to detect and enhance the possibility of voluntary muscle contractions in the residual limb leading to muscular movement. An electric motor is turned on by the amplified electrical signal to give a function (such wrist rotation, elbow flexion, or terminal unit working). The latest electronic control systems are multifunctional, allowing for sequential operation of elbow, wrist, and hand movements.

Individuals who have at least one year old are suggested to use myoelectrical hand prostheses. Infants with congenital absence of the hand(s) and/or forearm(s) are often fitted with a classic passive prosthesis until they are 12 to 16 months old; beyond that, a myoelectrical prosthesis may be utilized.

The average warranty for myoelectric hand prostheses is one year for parts and labor. The motor and drive mechanisms may need to be replaced after their typical two to three-year lifespan. When applied to a young child, the sockets might need to be changed every 12 to 18 months due to growth. Under severe use, the entire prosthesis might need to be replaced by the fifth year.
